Decisions, decisions…every day is full of choices both big and small. Sometimes they seem monumental…should I spend this time and money, go after this job, take this course, write this book, trust this person? And sometimes they are small but still important. It helps to pray for God’s Will…but how do we KNOW what that is?
Recently I asked a counselor friend of mine which way to go and he shed a new light on discernment. I was mulling over an important decision I needed to make regarding the direction of my writing and asked his opinion (after polling a handful of friends) and he said, “I know you’re not going to like this answer but either way is the best way.” Frustrated, I asked, “but how can that be?” He said, “whichever way you choose, you’ll either get a blessing, or a lesson that in itself will be a blessing because it will be what you needed to learn.” Huh. I let that sink in and finally it made sense.
Do you have a decision to make that you’re struggling with? Take time to pray about it…and listen for God’s answer. It may be “yes”, “no”, or “not yet.” It may come through a sign, talking to a trusted friend, or from within. Then, after you make it, have faith that either way will be the best way.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
